The hub supports research to improve measurement issues, data comparability, and substantive topics in foundational learning. To build research capacity, it funds PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, offers residency opportunities for African researchers and collaborates on projects to address learning gaps and inequalities across the continent.

Critical Review of Research on Affordable Measurement of Reading in the Early Grades

This review evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of existing early-grade reading assessments. It helps policymakers, researchers, and practitioners make informed decisions about improving assessment systems in resource-constrained environments. It also lays the groundwork for future research addressing the identified gaps, ensuring that early-grade learning assessments are affordable and effective.

Quality Assessments in Local Contexts

Assessments are firmly embedded in education systems; the key question is whether international assessment standards are always possible. This study considers the complexity of administering quality assessments from diverse perspectives, explores strategies for improvement, and provides guidelines for coordinating technical assistance to local assessment experts.

AFLEARN Annual Data Quality Report

This report critically assesses data quality from regional, national, and localised assessments. It will be produced by the hub in collaboration with selected African scholars and guided by experts in the field, particularly in the first two years. This collaborative approach will contribute to expanding the pool of researchers in the Global South.
