Learner Unit Record Data for South African schools 2017-2024

DataFirst now shares multi-year data from the Department of Basic Education’s Learner Unit Record Information and Tracking System (LURITS).

LURITS is used by schools in South Africa to record data for each learner. The system also tracks each learner's movement from school to school. LURITS data is drawn from computerised school administration systems. Schools without computerised school administration systems provide paper-based reports to districts for uploading to LURITS.

The data provided by DataFirst is the LURITS data prepared as research-ready by Martin Gustafsson who is a researcher at Research on Socio-Economic Policy (RESEP) in the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University, and an advisor to South Africa’s Department of Basic Education.

The LURITS dataset includes unit record data on learners from Grade R to Grade 12, as well as data on educators and schools.

Because the LURITS data files are large, the data is provided as separate datasets for 2017-2021, 2022-2023, and 2024.

The datasets are shared under the Department of Basic Education dataset Collection.
